Volunteer Opportunities > Signal Butte, Burning Bear and Gill Trail Restorations

Signal Butte Trail

Following the Hayman fire, the Signal Butte area near Divide, CO was in desperate need of restoration, specifically for safety reasons.  CUSP was able to work with volunteers and the forestry services to accomplish trail stair maintenance, reroute trails where necessary, and improve back slope safety.

Boy Scouts of America receive instruction, work hard, and accomplish their goal.

Burning Bear Trail

During the 2005 season, CUSP staff and volunteers (including UP with People, US Forest Service, Tumbling River Ranch and interested individuals), completed 2 stages of the Burning Bear Creek Trail.  The first section-a built up ground path and the second section-raised bridge, are primarily used equestrian trails.

In 2006, CUSP plans to finish sections targeted for completion this fall.  For more information, contact CUSP @ 719-748-0033 or
Funding for the 2005 Burning Bear project was provided by an EPA Targeted Watershed Program and donations from local businesses, individuals and foundations.

Gill Trail at Cheesman

Trail unrestored

In 2007, a new 1 mile section of trail will be added as CTCTU and CUSP are joined by Volunteers of Colorado and Denver Water.

This season the Coalition joined forces with the Cutthroat Chapter of Trout Unlimited to continue rehabilitating the Gill Trail at Cheesman Reservoir.  Thanks to volunteers from the Cutthroat Chapter along with CUSP staff, Eagle Scouts, and Colorado’s Finest Alternative School, the newly reopened trail will be safer and more enjoyable for recreational visitors.
