Mosquito Creek near Mosquito Pass

Mining has played an important role in the history of the Upper South Platte Watershed. During 1860 and 1861, almost a quarter of Colorado’s population resided in the mountains surrounding South Park - an open mountain valley in the western portion of the watershed. These were miners, hoping to strike it rich on gold, silver, or even salt. Water quality on Mosquito Creek has been impacted by metals and acid mine drainage from the mines along it.
