The nature of the ponderosa pine forests that predominate in the montane area of the Watershed has changed drastically since Euro-Americans came to the watershed. The forest those first explorers and settlers found were more open, with fewer trees per acre. They also had a lower percentage of Douglas fir.
These changes in forest character have resulted in overcrowded forest canopies that are subject to catastrophic fire and insect invasions. The partners are committed to a stewardship forestry initiative that will help return the forest to a healthier condition.
