As the Hayman fire burned through the property of John and Bani Kurth, it dropped to the ground and burned at low intensity, thanks to work the Kurths had done to improve forest health on their land, and provide defensible space for their home. They thinned trees, and removed ladder fuels, yielding a site that is fire resistant, yet still beautiful.
