In 2002 a large catastrophic fire raced through the Ponderosa pine forests just outside of large population centers. The Hayman Fire burned 138,000 acres, the largest fire in Colorado’s history. This fire brought to light the need to manage for future fires within the Urban Interface Forest. The fire is now a memory, yet many individuals still feel the wrath of this catastrophic wildfire. The fire consumed everything in its path, leaving no grass or living trees to hold back the decomposed granite soil. Debris flows of ash and rock flow into the creeks and streams. Many individuals have shown great support in lending a hand with the slow process of restoration.
