The Ponderosa pine forest that covers much of the land within the watershed is known as a montane type ecosystem. Within this system several species of evergreen trees are found with Ponderosa being most dominant in this area. Ponderosa Pine (Pinus ponderosa) can grow up to 100’ in height and can be 2- 3’ in diameter. The bark is flaky with deep black crevices. The Ponderosa Pine thrives in areas that have frequent low intensity fires, which consume competing, smaller trees and cones. Pockets of golden Aspen cover the hillsides throughout this area. Aspen (Populus tremuloides) can grow 20-50’ tall and up to 3’ in diameter. The bark is whitish with black rough areas. The leaves will quake or tremble with even the slightest breeze.
