Barry Johnston examines restored forest area.

Currently a Ponderosa Pine forest on the Front Range can have anywhere from 500 to 800 trees per acre. Historically the numbers were much lower, around 80 to 100 per acre. As fires have been suppressed for centuries the forest has become overgrown and crowded. Nutrients, and precious water, which once cared for a small number of trees must now feed and nourish many. Without fire to reduce population numbers many trees have grown weak, becoming more susceptible to insects and disease. We have altered the fire regime within this forest. With proper management strategies that include mechanical thinning and prescribed burning we can help restore a balance and lessen impacts from future wild fires.
