This stand is slated for restoration. The stand is typical of the ponderosa pine forest in Colorados Front Range. The stand regenerated after cutting in the late 1800s. Grazing and wildfire suppression through much of the 20th century has resulted in hundreds of thousands of acres of dense ponderosa pine. These dense forests burn as high-intensity, crown fires that kill all or most of the mature trees. While the thick-barked ponderosa pine is well adapted to survive surface fires that occurred in the historically more open, park-like forests, the species is not adapted to survive or regenerate after high-intensity, crown fires.
