Denver Water and the Colorado State Forest Service worked together to thin this ponderosa pine stand near Trumbull, Colorado. The management objectives were to reduce the risk of high intensity fires by emulating the historic forest conditions. Most of the smaller trees were removed and the larger trees were thinned to create a more open, park-like stand. Thinning trees in this manner promotes more understory vegetation including blue grama grass (Bouteloua gracilis) and prairie gayfeather (Liatris punctata) that provide essential habitat for the threatened Pawnee montane skipper (Hesperia leonardus montana).
