The Middle Fork of the South Platte is a tributary that starts in the northwest corner of the watershed, near Hoosier Pass. Before its confluence with the South Fork, it supplies water to the towns of Alma and Fairplay. Traditionally, most water in the Middle Fork was used to irrigate hay fields. Today, the City of Aurora, a Front Range city in the Denver Metro area, has acquired a number of those water rights and converted them to municipal use. They store this water in Spinney Mountain Reservoir, just below the confluence of the Middle Fork and the South Fork.
