Thinning & Prescribed Burn Modifired Fire Behavior

Firewood cutting thinned the forest above the road in the 1990s. Prescribed fire was used to further reduce the fuel load a couple years before the Hi Meadow Fire burned the area in June 2000. The area below the road that was not thinned or burned in the prescribed fire burned at high intensity while the area above the road burned at low intensity. A mature forest remains where the thinned area burned at low intensity while grasses and snags dominate the unmanaged area.
