The Watershed is home to a number of species protected under the United States Endangered Species Act. When people think of threatened and endangered species, they usually think of the bald eagle (yup, we have nesting populations here), but there are other less known animals and plants that are threatened or endangered also. Take the Pawnee montane skipper (a butterfly found nowhere else in the world), the Prebble's jumping mouse, or the mountain plover, all species that count on the Watershed for their survival. And for the botanists, our plants deserve attention as well. According to the Colorado Natural Heritage Project the Watershed supports "some of the highest quality bristlecone pine (Pinus aristata) forests ever documented in the world, the largest montane shortgrass grassland ever documented, unusual and critically imperiled wetlands, and numerous globally significant plant species."
